Asian Students Promoting Identity, Reflection, and Education (ASPIRE)

The ASPIRE program provides a foundational knowledge of contemporary Asian Pacific American issues for Philadelphia high school students by facilitating open dialogue and identity-based discussions. Our mission is to give participants useful skills such as the ability to analyze and understand current sociopolitical issues and events and the ability to see a more nuanced, inclusive view of America. We also will mentor our participants to help them gain skills they could use for college or other future endeavors and help them utilize the resources available to them.

High school students travel to Penn’s campus twice a month for these 2-hour long, facilitator-led discussions, and receive SEPTA tokens for their return-trip back home. The program is open to all high school students with tokens for transportation to Penn’s campus included.

Session dates for Spring 2019

Sessions will be held at the University of Pennsylvania ARCH Building on the following Saturdays from 1pm – 3pm:

  • Session 1: January 19, 2019

  • Session 2: January 26, 2019

  • Session 3: February 2, 2019

  • Session 4: February 16, 2019

  • Session 5: February 23, 2019

  • Session 6: March 16, 2019

  • Graduation: March 23, 2019

Undergraduate Facilitators

  • Work with other students to prepare and lead workshops for high school students.
  • Prepare ice breakers, activities, and discussion topics that will be used for the session.
  • In charge of managing time, encouraging different students to speak, and making sure the session run smoothly.

Prior experience facilitating is not required. However, since we expect you to act as leaders of the discussion and be informed about the topics, we will hold a few mandatory mock facilitation sessions and meet before each official ASPIRE session.
